Comparing them to $kaycog’s prizes in COTD. What do you all think?

Meh, I’ve never been much of a fan of the COTD thing. No offence $kay. They’ve always seemed like they are more of a bother to explain to the wife/employer than they are worth for me.

I think there should be grid guys for female drivers (when and if there are any; I don’t watch F1), and grid girls for the men (or maybe a grid guy for a man who requests it). Everyone deserves a little cheesecake once in a while. And people need to lighten up about $kaycog’s COTD awards. It’s all in fun. The couple of times a gal has won, she gets a male award. Seems fair to me.

I think people need to stop being so overly sensitive

Kind of opens the door regarding using sexuality to sell products or as entertainment in general.

Is this a bad thing?

I prefer the BTCC method. Each team has to appoint an employee to hold the sign by the car. Sure some of the teams still end up appointing female employees to hold the sign but these women also work for the team 9-5 the rest of the week, often working for marketing, social media, and PR in addition to choosing to be on the grid.

I’m not a fan of the COTD pics. If you want to look at pics of sexy women, there are plenty of places to do that on the internet, but it doesn’t feel appropriate for a car site. Also, while $kay is clearly fine with them, I worry that they might make the site unwelcoming to female readers.

It doesn’t seem weird to me because I’m so used to it. I feel like if $kay stopped someone would take her place.

Different intention and implementation.

$kay’s pictures are not officially endorsed and they are pictures taken primarily of the model with a car in the background. F1 Grid Girls were officially endorsed and the women were secondary to the race, the cars, the drivers, and even the signs they are holding.

To make it more crass, it’s the difference between “You’re beautiful, let me take a picture of you next to this car” and “You’re beautiful, please hold this sign next to my much more important driver and race car”

What defines overly sensitive?

I can see that. The girl in the picture is the focus of the picture for most people while grid girls are not even in the same universe as the drivers.

I don’t doubt it. There are others who have posted pics before, and I’m sure absent moderation someone would pick up, at least for a while. Regardless, I feel like it’s an unnecessary, and potentially harmful “feature”.

Being sensitive, but overly so...you know?

It’s definitely something that’s not easy to define, maybe even from the inside.

Perhaps some of $kay’s pictures were situations where the model wasn’t properly compensated or were simply in situations they didn’t want to be in, and maybe some of the grid girls enjoyed some modeling work that wasn’t focused on their looks alone.

All of it is too far from my realm of experience to give more than passing comments on though.

I’m guessing you weren’t around when Oppo banned NFSW posts. It was an ordeal.

They’ve always been banned from my memory of the rules, and I don’t recall any drama there, so presumably you are right.

I’m attracted to women, that’s not my objection to grid girls and using pinups as “prizes.” Making it men doesn’t make the actual problem go away.

I see your point. If you don’t think people should be portrayed as sexualized in any way, then parity in that regard won’t resolve your objection.

I don’t quite think you’re seeing my point. When one has agency in their sexuality, it can be empowering. I don’t have an issue with ethically produced porn. When you’re being used as a prize because of your looks (outside of something like a negotiated, consensual role-playing session)... Not so much.

Both outdated practices that people still feel the need to defend - the comparison is apt.

If you do not object to sexualized images of either gender in public, then I guess I don’t understand. I think that when you pose for a pinup in a car mag, or a nudie mag, or act in a porn flick, you are licensing your image for use by anyone who pays to see it (e.g: by buying a copy of a magazine or a ticket to a race) knowing full well that the users of that image will share and disperse it for public use, and that use is meant to be some form of sexual enjoyment. As long as the person posing is fairly compensated to his/her satisfaction and not coerced in any way to release it, then I see that person as empowered to use their personal assets as they choose. I think giving that person’s image as a prize does not lessen that person any further. I think anyone in their right mind recognizes that the person herself is not being given.

I feel like that doesn’t hold water. I’m not experienced with the porn industry but I do not see how being a payed sexual actor is better than being a paid model. Both people are doing a job where the aim is to please the eye and mine with their bodies.

Agency does exist for an employee such as a model because, employment (by its nature) is an agreement between two parties, whereby the employee provides service (i.e. time, and labor). The employer provides payment for said services. This provides mutual benefit for both parties.

Ah. Sooooo if you don’t like your brain cells, I recommend going through the annuls of oppo and seeing the shitshow that unfolded. It was pretty epic. For a brief period, lots of work filters were blocking oppo because the NSFW got so intense.

Meh. As long as racing orgs want grid girls (and there are willing grid girls), I have no issue. Same goes for COTD babes, until they get Hulkamania’d.

MotoGP does it better with their podium girls, just like with their racing. Champagne anyone?

I got sucked into reading most of that on the FP. I’m having a hard time forming a response right now, but keep fighting the good fight, yamahog.

I wish more of the people commenting over there were willing to listen to your point of view instead of yelling inane things like “people should be allowed to work demeaning jobs that set a bad example for the next generation while perpetuating negative stereotypes!”
